JPG and PNG solve different problems, and converting between them is less about upgrading an image and more about choosing the right container for what you plan to do next. JPEG was designed for photographs: it uses lossy compression that permanently deletes subtle detail to keep file sizes tiny. PNG was designed for graphics and precision: it is lossless, keeps every pixel, and adds an alpha channel for transparency. Understanding that split is the key to knowing when a JPG-to-PNG conversion is worth doing.
The single most common misunderstanding is that converting a JPG to PNG cleans it up. It does not. When the tool decodes your JPEG, it reads pixels that already reflect every compression artifact baked in when the JPG was created. Re-encoding those pixels as a lossless PNG faithfully copies them, blocky edges and color banding included. PNG protects the image from future degradation, but it has no way to reconstruct the original detail that JPEG discarded. If a JPG looks soft or full of halos, those flaws travel into the PNG unchanged.
The real payoff of PNG is editing safety and edge sharpness. Every time you save a JPG, the lossy compression runs again and quietly removes a little more data, so an image edited and resaved several times slowly falls apart. Converting to PNG before you start editing freezes the current quality: you can crop, annotate, recolor, and resave as many times as you like without stacking new losses. PNG also renders text, UI elements, thin lines, and solid color blocks crisply, which is exactly why screenshots, diagrams, and logos belong in PNG rather than JPG.
Transparency is the other reason people convert, but it works differently than many expect. JPEG simply cannot store transparency, so a JPG always has a fully opaque background. Converting to PNG gives you a format capable of transparency, yet it does not create any. A photo with a white backdrop becomes a PNG with a white backdrop. Achieving a see-through background is a separate editing step where you remove or mask the existing pixels, after which PNG's alpha channel can store the result that JPEG never could.
Finally, weigh the file size trade-off before converting in bulk. For detailed photographs, expect the PNG to be noticeably larger, since lossless compression cannot compete with JPEG on photographic content. For images with large flat areas, few colors, or sharp graphics, PNG often matches or beats the JPG size while looking better. Match the format to the content: PNG for graphics, editing, and transparency; JPG when a small photo file is all you need.
