Most of the world measures in millimeters, but plenty of workshops, tape measures, drill indexes, and fastener bins are still imperial. That mismatch is why mm-to-inch conversion is one of the most common little calculations people make. The good news is that the relationship is fixed and simple: since 1959 the inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters by international agreement. That single constant means there is no regional variation and no measurement drift; the conversion is purely arithmetic.
To convert, divide the millimeter figure by 25.4. If mental math is easier the other way, multiply by 0.0393701, which is one millimeter expressed in inches. A few anchors are worth memorizing: 25.4 mm is exactly 1 inch, 12.7 mm is exactly half an inch, and roughly 25 mm is a close everyday stand-in for an inch when you only need a ballpark. Beyond those, expect untidy decimals, because most metric values do not map onto a round number of inches.
Decimals are fine for spreadsheets and calipers, but a tape measure speaks in fractions. The conversion trick is to multiply the decimal portion of your inches by the denominator you want and round to the nearest whole number. Want sixteenths? Multiply by 16. The danger is rounding too early: if you round 12 mm to 1/2 inch and then a second part to 1/2 inch, two parts that were never equal in metric can end up sharing one fraction and throwing off your fit.
In practice the safest workflow is to keep the exact decimal until the last possible step, then round once to the fraction your tools can actually hit. That habit pays off whether you are matching an M5 bolt to an imperial wrench, comparing a 7.62 mm bore to its .30-caliber label, sizing jewelry wire by gauge, or cross-checking an overseas spec sheet. The conversion never changes; how carefully you round is what separates a clean fit from a frustrating one.
