How to Recover an Unsaved Document
By the Super Simple Digital Tools Team · Updated June 2026 · Easy · 10 minutes
Losing an unsaved document is gut-wrenching, but most modern apps keep autosaved or temporary copies in the background. Acting quickly and knowing where to look gives you a strong chance of recovery.
Steps
- Reopen the app. Launch the program again — Word, Excel and many editors show a 'Document Recovery' pane with recovered files on restart.
- Check autosave/version history. In Office, go to File → Info → Manage Document → Recover Unsaved Documents. In Google Docs, use File → Version history.
- Search temp files. Search your system for the file extension (e.g. .asd for Word, .tmp) or check the AutoRecovery folder noted in the app's save settings.
- Look in the cloud. If the file syncs to OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox, open the web version and restore a previous version.
- Save immediately. When you find the content, copy it into a fresh document and save right away to a known location.
Tips
- Turn on autosave and set the recovery interval to 1–5 minutes in the app's options.
- Use a cloud-synced folder so version history is always available.
