How to Take a Screenshot
By the Super Simple Digital Tools Team · Updated June 2026 · Easy · 2 minutes
Screenshots are the fastest way to save an error message, share what you're seeing or keep a receipt. Every device has a built-in shortcut — you just need to know the right keys or buttons.
Steps
- Windows. Press Windows + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool and drag to select an area, or press PrtScn to copy the whole screen.
- Mac. Press Cmd + Shift + 4 to select an area, or Cmd + Shift + 3 for the full screen. Files save to the desktop by default.
- iPhone. Press the side button and the volume-up button together. On older models, press the home and side buttons.
- Android. Press the power and volume-down buttons at the same time for about a second.
- Find and edit. A thumbnail or notification appears — tap it to crop, annotate or share before it saves to your photos/screenshots folder.
Tips
- On phones, a quick swipe-down notification lets you crop or share immediately.
- Need just one window on Mac? Press Cmd + Shift + 4, then Spacebar, then click the window.
